DECA announces local scholarship winners

The Defense Commissary Agency has announced winners of the 2009 Scholarships for Military Children Program for the Maxwell and Gunter commissaries.

DECA officials said the recipients announced at http://www.militaryscholar.org are contingent on determination of military dependency status. If the student is ineligible, or if the recipient decides not to attend college, a replacement will be announced, officials said.

"We're excited to report that the scholarship program continues to be a success in helping military families defray the cost of education," said DECA Director and Chief Executive Officer Philip E. Sakowitz Jr. "We're proud to be associated with a program that has awarded 4,132 scholarships totaling more than $6.4 million since its inception in 2001."

Receiving $1,500 scholarships from the Maxwell commissary are Arielle K. Juarez, Jessica L. Hoover, Abigail R. Day, Daniel J. Broderick and Christopher D. Phillips. The recipients from the Gunter commissary are Laura E. Broderick and Daniel J. Teal.

The scholarships are based on academic merit, participation in extracurricular and volunteer activities, and the quality of their essays, officials said.

The DECA scholarship program is administered by Fisher House foundation, a nonprofit organization responsible for building comfort homes near military medical centers. Officials said the foundation bears all costs of the program so that every dollar donated goes for scholarships. The public can donate through the military scholar Web site, officials said.
