Airman's Attic open house Monday

12/10/2010 - MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Al -- The Airman's Attic suggests a great way to make room for new holiday gifts - donate unwanted items to junior enlisted members in need.
"I like to tell everyone that we'll take anything and everything," said Staff Sgt. Kirsten Wong, the facility's director.
To raise awareness about the Airman's Attic, Sergeantt Wong is holding an open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday. The enlisted Spouses Club will provide snacks and refreshments.
The open house is a way to discover volunteer opportunities as well.
"Volunteers can be military, retired, spouses, dependents, anyone who is willing to give some time to give back to the community," she said.
People are needed for a variety of tasks, including hanging items, stocking shelves, organizing and cleaning.
"We are currently putting out winter clothing items, but good summer clothing is being stored in our storage room for next summer," Sergeant Wong said.
The facility is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, and from 9 a.m. to noon the first Saturday of the month.
Donations are accepted inside during open hours. An outside bin is available when the facility is closed.
"If someone is donating furniture, then we ask them to please donate during working hours," she said. "We also try to work with people who would like to donate large items and have no way of getting them to the Attic."
The Airman's Attic provides donated items to active-duty military members of branches, E-6 and below. A recent policy change makes National Guard and Army
Reserve members on active orders eligible.
There are limits on how many items can be selected. For example, only one large furniture or baby item can be taken per month and only three children's outfits per week. Military clothing items are unlimited and open to any rank, she said.
