Maxwell to centralize injury compensation

1/6/2012 - MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- Maxwell-Gunter is now being included in the next step of Injury Compensation centralization, effective Jan. 16.

The injury compensation office at the Air Force Personnel Center, with a staff of human resources specialists with extensive experience in injury compensation, will assume program administration responsibilities for Maxwell-Gunter. Supervisors will now become the main point of contact for employees who sustain an on-the-job injury rather than civilian personnel section program administrators.

In February 2010, the Air Force launched a six-month pilot to centralize the Injury Compensation program at the Air Force Personnel Center. During this pilot period, the AFPC IC office assumed administrative responsibilities for four bases, streamlining and refining the centralized operation with standardized processes. By being dedicated solely to the IC program, they also improved case management and worked directly with the pilot bases to develop standardized reports to be used for the Federal Employees' Compensation Act, or FECA, workgroup meetings.

Based upon the success of the pilot program, it was decided that AFPC IC would centralize all IC operations for the remaining 78 bases. This process is to be completed by Sept. 30.

The Air Force IC Program is based on the FECA, which provides compensation benefits to federal civilian employees who sustain a work-related injury or occupational disease while in the performance of duty. The FECA also provides compensation benefits to surviving dependents if a work-related injury or disease causes the death of an employee.

Documents have been forwarded to the civilian liaisons to assist in the transition to centralized servicing at AFPC for Injury Compensation. New web-based training on the basics of the workers' compensation program has been developed for supervisors. The training covers topics such as actions to be taken when an employee is injured, authorizing treatment using CA-16 forms and continuation of pay. This training can be accessed by selecting the training opportunities link under the Products and Services at http://www.cpms.osd.mil/icuc/icuc_index.aspx.
