5/11/2012 - MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- Jessica Inman, Hallay Solomon and Daniel Broderick, who submitted scholarship applications through Maxwell Commissary, and Ayumi Byrd, who submitted an application through Gunter Commissary, are among the 670 students, all children of serving or retired military personnel, who received $1,500 scholarship grants through the Defense Commissary Agency's Scholarships for Military Children Program.

The Scholarships for Military Children Program was created in recognition of the contributions of military families to the readiness of the fighting force and to celebrate the role of the commissary in the military community. It is the intent of the program that a scholarship funded through contributions be awarded annually for each commissary operated by the Defense Commissary Agency worldwide.

The Scholarships for Military Children Program is primarily funded through the generosity of manufacturers and suppliers whose products are sold at military commissaries worldwide. Military families are encouraged to take advantage of commissary benefits that not only provide a savings of more than 30 percent on the products purchased but also support the military community through programs such as this scholarship.

The Fisher House Foundation volunteered to underwrite the administration of the Scholarships for Military Children Program. Fisher House Foundation, which provides a "home away from home" near military medical centers for families experiencing a personal medical crisis, is one of the premier quality of life organizations supporting military families.

A minimum of one $1500 scholarship was awarded at every commissary location where qualified applications are received. The scholarship provides for payment of tuition, books, lab fees and other related expenses.
