Remembering British, French war dead

Maxwell and Gunter officials joined international officers Sunday at Montgomery’s Oakwood Cemetery for the annual Service of Remembrance for British and French war dead. Eighty members of the Royal Air Force along with 20 French airmen are buried in Oakwood Cemetery. After winning the Air War College Chili Cook Off, student Lt. Col. Brad Felling went for the Montgomery area, entering the Montgomery Lions Club Red Hot Capitol City Chili Cook Off Oct. 31. Representing Air University, Colonel Felling’s team was the only military entry of 25 teams that competed to raise money for local charities. Combined Federal Campaign begins Monday

The Combined Federal Campaign will have its Maxwell-Gunter kickoff celebration at the Officers' Club Monday at 9 a.m., according to project officer Capt. Clarence Anderson. CFC is the world's largest annual workplace charity campaign and has raised funds for federal, state and local non-profit, charitable agencies. During the CFC campaign, which extends through November, other fund-raising activities on base is prohibited, according to Captain Anderson. SOS Class 2009-F donates to charities

Members of Squadron Officer School Class 2009-F made a significant contribution to local charities during their five-week stay at Maxwell. The class donated $1,093 to both the Wounded Warrior and Fisher House foundations. They conducted a blood drive with the American Red Cross and gave 90 pints of blood while registering 118 class members as bone marrow donors. They volunteered to work in the Salvation Army and continued a 49-year SOS tradition of donating to Faith Crusades Mission food collection program. This class donated 500 pounds of food. Joining the 'long blue line'

An Air Force ROTC cadet touches Maxwell's monument to the "Prop and Wings" in a ceremony June 19 that signified the cadets acceptance into the "long blue line of the Air Force." The cadets wear the prop and wings emblem after completing the arduous first phase of officer training. Air Education and Training Command Commander Gen. Stephen Lorenz established the ceremony at Maxwell in 2007 while he commanded Air University. He attended the Maxwell ceremony June 19. The prop and wings emblem was first worn by aviation cadets in 1917. Today the emblem is worn by cadets at the Air Force Academy and Officer Training School in addition to cadets in Air Force ROTC. Volleyball, a run and a balloon toss were some of the events that highlighted the 42nd Air Base Wing picnic and sports day May 15 at Hopper-Lodge. Following the opening remarks from Col. Kris Beasley, 42nd ABW commander, the day began with a 5K fitness run and moved on to a health information fair, sporting and children events. After lunch, wing chiefs and first sergeants took on the commanders in a volleyball match, and the day culminated in recognizing volunteers for the event. (U.S. Air Force photo/Jamie Pitcher)
