The 42nd Air Base Wing's fire department earned a recommendation for becoming an accredited institution through the Commission on Fire Accreditation on Maxwell Air Force Base, Jan. 9, 2015. Culminating a four-year process, Maxwell will be the first base in Air Education and Training Command to become certified after their recommendation goes before the accrediting agency board on March 18, 2015. Lt. Gen. Steven Kwast, Air University commander, presents Gene Kranz with the Air Force ROTC Distinguished Alumni Award during a ceremony Dec. 16, 2014, at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. Kranz, who received his commission through the ROTC program at Saint Louis University in 1954, was the flight director for the Apollo 13 mission in April 1970 that ended successfully following an explosion aboard the space capsule. Alabama Governor Robert Bentley speaks with Mary Smith, Gunter Child Development Center child and youth program assistant, Dec. 10. The governor visited the CDC to highlight Alabama’s First Class Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten Program. Bentley announced a $17.5 million federal grant to Alabama to support Alabama communities in providing high-quality preschool programs. A portion of those funds will support the CDCs at both Maxwell and Gunter. The funds will be used to help pay teachers, facilitate field trips and improve playground equipment.
