MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- Members of the 42nd Security Forces maintained security during an incident outside of the Day Street gate here, yesterday.
An individual fired a weapon several times at the intersection of Day Street and Airbase Boulevard before fleeing the scene in his vehicle. Anti-establishment graffiti was also spray painted on the pavement outside Day Street gate.
No one was injured during the shooting and investigators found no damage to the base.
“I’m very pleased with the professional response and restraint by our Defenders during the incident and their hard worked to support the Montgomery Police Department and City of Montgomery after the incident,” said Colonel Eric Shafa, commander 42nd Air Base Wing. “We are thankful no one was hurt, and we encourage everyone to stay observant to your surroundings and report any suspicious activity to the local authorities.”
Because the incident occurred off-base, despite its close proximity to the gate, the Montgomery Police Department has jurisdiction and apprehended the suspect early this morning. The incident is still under investigation by the Montgomery Policy Department and other agencies.
Capt. Joshua Khune, 42nd SFS, operations officer, said the Airman at the gate did a good job from a security forces perspective. They maintained excellent vigilance and responded in a quick and decisive manner, and were more than willing to put in the extra effort to maintain security for the base.
“Our Airmen hold the security and defense of our base as their top priority,” he added.
