7/27/2012 - MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala.,  -- Maxwell's Airman and Family Readiness Center is sponsoring a healthy family conference from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at Maxwell Elementary Middle School .
This free conference is an opportunity for families to attend workshops about how to be healthy as a family.

"We are trying to promote healthy lifestyle for our families," said Derrick Sanders, 42nd Force Support Squadron, Family Support Branch chief. "All of the workshops we are offering are designed to help family members at the different stages of life."

This is the second year the Airman and Family Readiness Center has sponsored the conference. The Healthy Family Conference's theme is "Healthy and I know it." Class subjects vary from nutrition guidance to communication improvement.

"The event is designed to bring together families and single Airmen to learn life skills," said Marie Hixon, personal and work life consultant. "The idea came out of a love for the military and military families and we wanted to provide something that would give back."

There are four tracks of classes, divided by age. Adults, teens, pre-teens and children will select three classes they wish to attend, then schedule their day accordingly.

Children will be able to enjoy Sparkey from the Maxwell Fire Department, a bounce house and a demonstration from the military working dogs.

"The daily stresses affect people in different stages of life differently," said Sanders. "We want to give the entire family an opportunity to get healthy."

Healthy refreshment stations will be provided for attendees, and the first 100 people to sign up will get a free T-shirt. Vendors will be setting up at 8:00 a.m.

For more information about registering for the conference contact the Airman and Family Readiness Center at 953-2353.
