Making a difference: FWP award ceremony recognizes women in the workplace

9/4/2012 - MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -  -- To show recognition for a job well done, the Federal Women's Program distributed distinguished service awards during its luncheon at the Maxwell Club on Aug. 23.

The annual awards were created to recognize the achievements of employees and supervisors for their support of the FWP and the principles of equal employment opportunity.

"To me, the Federal Women's Program means equal employment opportunities for women in federal service," said Senior Master Sgt. Karen Plunkett, from the Barnes Center and winner of the supervisor of the year award. "The Federal Women's Program is an advocate for career women, for their education and career progression. This is especially important for our younger women just entering federal service, whether they are in civil service or wear the uniform."

Plunkett said she is extremely honored and humbled to have even been nominated, let alone win.

Additional 2012 award winners are:

· Civilian category I: Sandrilla Oliver, 42nd Medical Group
· Civilian category II: Dr. Patricia Maggard, Squadron Officer School
· Military enlisted: Master Sgt. Tammy Robinson, 42nd Medical Group
· Military officer: Capt. Ebony Haney, 30th Student Squadron, Squadron Officer School

"The award ceremony shows the importance of the employees here and what they contribute," said Christina Winston, FWP president. "Not everyone can win the award, but whether they won or whether they did not, it is important to recognize these individuals and their achievements in the workplace and beyond."

Established in 1963, the FWP is a special emphasis program that helps enhance employment and removes employment barriers for women. Locally, the program promotes the professional development of the Maxwell workforce with training, workshops and seminars held throughout the year.

Maxwell's FWP began in June 1976, advancing equal opportunity for civilian and military personnel. The group promotes equality through career counseling and assistance in career planning through training classes and seminars.

The FWP meets from 8-9 a.m. the first Wednesday of the month. For membership information, contact Winston at 953-2807.
