Tax center opening for 2013 tax season Published Jan. 31, 2014 By Tech. Sgt. Wendy L. Beech Noncommissioned Officer in Charge, General Law, 42nd Air Base Wing MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala.-- -- Just like birthdays, tax season comes around every year. Filing may not be as exciting as a party, but the 42nd Air Base Wing legal office tax center is here to ensure taxpayers get the refund they deserve. Services are offered to all who are eligible for legal assistance: active-duty service members, retirees, family members and Guard and Reserve members on orders. You may schedule your appointment starting Jan. 31 by calling 953-3529. Appointments are scheduled for one hour each between 8 a.m.-noon Monday-Friday. The tax center will officially open its doors starting Feb. 3 for single or married taxpayers with no family members to file basic tax returns. If you have any income other than from a W-2 or adjustments to income, the tax center will begin preparing those returns starting Feb. 18, to include retirees. When you meet with your tax preparer, you should bring all applicable income documents to the appointment, including a copy of last year's return, W-2 forms, social security cards for all family members, and all other applicable tax documents. Air Force W-2s are available on MyPay. If you receive anything in the mail labeled "Important Tax Documents Enclosed," bring it with you to your appointment. Additional tax documents may include 1099-DIV, 1099-INT, 1099-R, Unemployment Compensation, SSA-1099, and all information regarding your child care providers (SSNs or EIN numbers). For a direct deposit of the return, the taxpayer should bring a voided check with the account and routing numbers. Those claiming childcare expenses must have the name, employer ID number or social security number and address of the provider. The tax center staff is trained to complete basic returns. The tax center is not staffed to complete complex returns to include capital gain sales, small business and self-employed individuals, and rental properties. Call 953-3529 if you have any questions or to schedule an appointment. We are looking forward to hearing from you.
