The thrift shops – so much more than just shopping Published May 2, 2013 By Kim Milner Maxwell-Gunter Officers' Spouses' Club MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. - -- It is not uncommon to find a thrift store on Air Force installations, and Maxwell and Gunter Annex are no exception. Both have a thrift shop run by spouses' clubs, which is one of the ways spouses can make a difference in their military community. The thrift shops are a win-win for everyone. They are a great place to find treasures at amazing prices, and the proceeds benefit the community. Income from the thrift stores funds academic scholarships for military dependents pursuing their undergraduate degrees. Recently, the Maxwell-Gunter Officers' Spouses' Club awarded 15 recipients with academic scholarships. At the Maxwell Thrift Store, military families can consign items and make a percentage on the sale of those items. Thrift stores also help volunteers be a part of something bigger than themselves. The Maxwell Thrift Store, located in the mini mall just down from the Class Six Store, is open Tuesdays from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and 3-6 p.m., and Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Consignments are accepted Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., except on weeks when Monday is a federal holiday. The Gunter Thrift Store, located in building 850 on Ramp Road, also houses the formal wear loan closet known as Cinderella's Closet. Hours are from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursday and by appointment for Cinderella's Closet by calling 416-2928. Both stores are looking for people to shop, consign, donate and help out.
