Airmen provide free rides home Published Dec. 14, 2012 By Donovan Jackson Air University Public Affairs MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Al -- The Airmen Against Drunk Driving program is encouraging military identification card holders to use its anonymous transportation service this holiday season. A2D2's mission is to serve as an alternative means to driving after alcohol consumption. "Any amount of alcohol consumption is bad when trying to operate a motor vehicle," said Senior Airman China Ivie, physical therapy technician with the 42nd Medical Group and A2D2 volunteer. Ivie said she believes that the program is especially important during the holiday season because it gives Airmen the chance of making a sound decision that otherwise could have a negative impact on their military career. According to Capt. Emily Shilts, chief of justice at the 42nd Air Base Wing legal office, Airmen who are arrested on base and charged with a DUI can face possible penalties of confinement, reduction in rank, and loss of on-base driving privileges. It can hinder their chances for advancement. In order to get those who call out of harm's way, A2D2 is comprised of volunteers who use their personal vehicles to provide a safe means of transportation. Since its inception last March, the program has provided rides to more than 85 people. With over 100 logged hours as a volunteer in the A2D2 program, Ivie said that she is really happy with the results of the program. "I'm really happy that we have this program on the base," said Ivie. "While I was volunteering, I've picked up people that I knew, and it made me feel good to know that I was helping them out in a major way." When someone calls A2D2, only their first name, current location and where they live are required in order to be picked up by a volunteer. A2D2 can be contacted by calling 334-953-AADD (2233).
