Near the 18th hole on Cypress Tree's University golf course at Maxwell, co-workers of Randall C. Newsome planted a tree in his memory March 5 during a memorial service.

Mr. Newsome, assistant manager and then manager of the Cypress Tree Golf Course since 2002, died unexpectedly Feb. 24.

Maj. Kathryn Brown, chief of the 42nd Services Division, remembered Mr. Newsome as "a man of his word," and always putting others first while taking great pride in taking care of his people.

"He exemplified service before self," Major Brown said.

Major Brown reflected on Mr. Newsome's 20-year career in the Air Force, retiring as a master sergeant, before entering civil service in 1990.

Co-workers remembered Mr. Newsome as the first to arrive and last to leave, ensuring all things were ready for Maxwell's golf courses.

"He never did things the easy way," one co-worker said.

"The Newsome Tree" planted March 5 is a bald cypress and will grow to maybe make some shots on the 18th hole a little more difficult. Mr. Newsome would have liked that, co-workers said.
