MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. — The 42d Force Support Squadron’s Education Office is part of the installation’s broader education and training mission, playing a central role in supporting service members, families and civilian partners through a wide range of academic and professional development.
While primarily supporting Maxwell and Gunter Annex, the office also assists ROTC detachments, recruiters across the Southeast, Puerto Rico and total force partners, including Guard and Reserve members.
“The Office serves as the focal point for the Air Force’s voluntary education program across the installation and beyond.” said Thomas Baker, 42d Force Support Squadron education specialist. “We support 18,000 students, including active-duty members, Guard and Reserve personnel on orders, as well as dependents.”
Education services are tailored to meet service members at every stage of their careers, from entry-level Airmen to officers seeking advanced degrees tied to assignments and promotions. Education also plays a key role in leadership development.
“Pursuing a degree demonstrates dedication and builds essential skills such as communication, critical thinking and problem-solving,” said Baker. “It helps develop not just better Airmen, but better leaders and citizens. It’s something they carry with them for the rest of their lives.”
Among the primary benefits offered is Military Tuition Assistance, which provides up to $4,500 per fiscal year for off-duty education. Enlisted members can also take advantage of the Air Force Credentialing Opportunities online program, which funds civilian certifications.
Additional resources include guidance on GI Bill benefits, including transfer options for dependents, and free or low-cost testing programs such as College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) and Dante Subject Standardized Test (DSST), which allow individuals to earn college credit by passing subject exams.
“Education is a key reason people join the Air Force,” said Bradley Lundquist, 42d FSS Education Office Base-wide Support department manager. “Many enlist to gain educational opportunities, and our role is to maintain an educated force. Our team is committed to offering the best possible assistance to service members.”
Looking ahead, the office is focused on continuous improvement. Current initiatives include a needs assessment to better understand the population it serves, enhancements to initial tuition assistance counseling and workshops covering topics such as GI Bill benefits and Community College of the Air Force program.
Through its expanding programs and commitment to service, the Maxwell Education Office continues to support the academic and professional growth of the military community across the region.
