Key to success: Allied airpower at Normandy
Nearly a thousand C-47 Sky Train transports, such as these assigned to the 316th Troop Carrier Group, transported 24,000 Allied paratroopers across the English Channel for the massive paratrooper operations that began right after midnight, June 6, 1944. In addition, to paratroopers many also towed gliders (right center) with glider-borne troops and equipment aboard. All D-Day aircraft had wide white stripes painted on both wings and the rear fuselage to prevent Allied ships and soldiers from mistaking them for enemy aircraft. (Courtesy photo)
