CFC launches donation drive

9/30/2011 - MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- Members of the Maxwell-Gunter community met representatives from local agencies that benefit from the Combined Federal Campaign during a kickoff event Sept. 22 at the officers' club.

"As you know, the needs today have never been greater, so let's join together again to support worthy charities," said Lt. Gen. David Fadok, Air University commander and president and co-chair of the Heart of Alabama CFC campaign. "It's the American tradition of neighbors reaching out to neighbors."

Through payroll deductions, CFC has raised $7 billion for charities locally, nationally and globally since it began 50 years ago. Military, federal and postal employees are invited to participate.

Fadok said the goal for the Heart of Alabama region is $1,125,000, but Col. Brian Killough, 42nd Air Base Wing commander, has a higher total in mind. "I think we can do $1.2 million," he said. "Let's get fired up about giving."

Last year, the base contributed almost $700,000, exceeding its goal by more than $170,000. The Heart of Alabama campaign raised more than $1,131,000.

Killough encouraged the community to learn more about the charities participating in the campaign and select ones with a personal connection.

"Give from your heart," he said. "And don't assume that if we don't do it, someone else will."

Fadok reminded the audience that money pledged last year made a difference to those affected by tornados this spring. People in the state and across the country are facing difficult economic times, which makes it challenging to bounce back from unexpected hardships.

"These agencies call to us to help make a difference," he said. "I know we will respond generously."

The kickoff event included representatives from more than 30 local charities, who handed out information and door prizes. Staff Sgt. Joseph Smiley from the 42nd Medical Group was the master of ceremonies. Staff Sgt. Rebecca Thomas, also from the 42nd MDG, sang the national anthem.

The Heart of Alabama campaign runs through Nov. 10 and benefits more than 150 charities in 29 Alabama counties.
