STARBASE Maxwell / Montgomery Education Foundation

Event: STARBASE Maxwell STEM Careers in the Military Speaker Series

Location: STARBASE Maxwell, 60 W. Maxwell Bldg, Bldg. 835, Basement, Montgomery AL 36112

Purpose: The purpose of the STARBASE Maxwell STEM Speaker Series is to provide 5th grade students from Montgomery, Elmore County, and Autauga County Public Schools with the opportunity to explore STEM career fields (science, technology, engineering, and math).  Volunteers will educate students about their careers in the STEM field (how they became interested in their chosen career field, academic preparation, exciting elements of their career, etc.). We are looking for speakers who are either, military personnel and other personnel who have careers in STEM (science, math, engineering, and math).

Volunteers Requested: Three (3) speakers each day listed above, if possible 5

Duties: 30 minute presentation (20 minute presentation plus 10 minute Q&A session) to 5th grade students attending STARBASE Maxwell program. We want presenters to encourage our students to go into careers in STEM.  Speakers will create their own presentations using PowerPoint or whatever medium they choose to use to present to the students.  We’ve had speakers bring in actual equipment that they use for work (bomb sniffing dogs, flight gear, etc) or show videos of their work in action (designing a vehicle, building a game, etc.).  We encourage speakers to be as interactive with the students as possible.   PowerPoint presentations are not required but encouraged

Arrival Time: Between 1:00 – 1:10 pm for each session

Age Requirements: N/A

Special Skills: Must work in STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math) career fields - military personnel or industry

Deadline to Sign Up: Minimum three (3) days prior to each scheduled date listed.  We do not have a hard deadline because it is tough to find speakers so if someone agrees to serve as a speaker last minute (at least the morning of), we will accept them.

Alabama Wildlife Federation

 

Event: AWF Annual Youth Fishing Rodeo

Event Day(s)/Date(s)/Time(s): Saturday, August 10th, 2019 7:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.

Location: Alabama Nature Center, 3050 Lanark Road, Millbrook AL, 36054

Purpose: To promote the use and conservation of Alabama’s Natural Resources

 

Volunteers Requested: 10

Duties:

Registration Station: 2 persons, 6:30am-10:30am, aid in checking guests in, handing out t-shirts and stringers

Weight Station: 2 persons, 6:30am-11:00am, weigh and record fish weights as guests depart fishing rodeo

Parking Station: 4 persons, 6:30am-11:00am, aid in parking guests as well as guiding them to the registration table

Snack Station: 2 6:30am-11:00am, hand out snacks and waters to guests  

Arrival Time: 6:30am for all

Age Requirements: 16 years of age and must have own transportation

Event: Buckmaster Expo 2019

Event Day(s)/Date(s)/Time(s): Saturday-Sunday, August 17-18, 2019, 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Location: 900 Maxwell Blvd. – Soup Kitchen

Purpose of Event: To sort and box canned goods donated from this event

 

Volunteers Requested: 15 - 20

Duties: On going all day. On each day build boxes, sort canned goods, box up canned goods and store the boxes. Also, help prepare bag lunches/dinner and service the clients (clients will not have access to the soup kitchen)

Arrival Time(s):

Saturday, August 17, 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

Sunday, August 18, 8:00 a.m.–approx. 5:00 p.m.

Age Requirements: 13 and older/lot of standing, lifting and bending

Youth Employment Services (Y.E.S.) Inc.:

 

Event: New Senior Center Prep

Event Day(s)/Date(s)/Time(s): Saturday, 17 August 2019, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Location: 164 East South Blvd., Montgomery, AL 36105

Purpose: To prepare new Senior Center rooms

 

Volunteers Requested: 18

Duties:

Painters (10 volunteers), 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.: needed to paint 3 Class Rooms, using brushes and     rollers

Floor Waxers (5 volunteers), 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.: needed to put wax on the floors, will have mops to wax the floors

Clean Up (3 volunteers), 4:00 p.m-5:00 p.m. to pick up empty paint buckets, brushes, and floor covers

Plastic gloves and mask’s will be provided, as well as lunch and beverages to all Volunteers

Arrival Time(s): Based on duty (see above times)

Age Requirements: 16 years old and older. Minors require parental consent and/or accompanied by a parent/guardian

BASEBALL

Event: Youth Baseball

Day(s)/Date(s)/Time(s): Two days/wk one hour practices - coaches’ choice of days and time + evening games that could be on Mon, Tues, or Thurs evenings at either 6 p.m. or 7:10 p.m.

Season 3 Sept – 2 Nov 2019, practices beginning mid Aug 2019.

Location: Practices at Maxwell baseball fields on March Road, games at Mill Creek Sports Complex, Millbrook, AL.

Purpose: To provide opportunity for Maxwell youth to participate in the sport of baeball for recreational purposes and to engage in sport activities with the local community.

 

Volunteers Requested: 12

Duties:

  1. Instruct Basic baseball skills to youth age groups: 5, 6-7, 8-9. 10 -11, and 12.
  2. Teach sportsmanship.
  3. Encourage youth into lifetime participation in sports and fitness activities.
  4. Coaches do not need extensive background in baseball. Each team will have a head coach and an   

      assistant coach working together.

Age Requirements: 18 years or older

SOFTBALL

Event: Youth Softball

Location: Practices at Maxwell baseball fields on March Road, games at Memorial Park Circle, Millbrook, AL.

Purpose: To provide opportunity for Maxwell youth to participate in the sport of Softball for recreational purposes and to engage in sport activities with the local community.

 

Volunteers Requested: 12

Duties:

  1. Instruct Basic softball skills to youth age groups: 5, 6-7, 8-9. 10 -11, and 12.
  2. Teach sportsmanship.
  3. Encourage youth into lifetime participation in sports and fitness activities.

Purpose: To provide opportunity for Maxwell youth to participate in the sport of soccer for recreational purposes and to engage in sport activities with the local community.

  1. Instruct Basic soccer skills to youth age groups: 5, 6-7, 8-9. 10 -11, and 12.

Event: Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) Site Worker

Location: Maxwell Air Force Base, Gunter Annex or

Purpose: Liaise with MEPS staff to determine the best means for the Red Cross to connect with the recruits and their families

Duties/Tasks: Provide Red Cross preparedness information to the recruits and their families

Age Requirements: 18+

Special Skills:  Strong interpersonal communication and listening skills, enjoy working directly with others, able to work with diverse populations, able to use a computer or willing to learn

Event: Receptionist Volunteers Needed

 

Day(s)/Date(s)/Time(s): Need volunteers who are available at least one day per week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.  Normal volunteer hours will be 11:45 to 13:15 unless the receptionist is on vacation, sick, or attending training.  In those instances, it will be all day:  08:00 to 17:00.

Location: Contact volunteer coordinator for directions.

Purpose:  The Family Sunshine Center exists to end family violence and sexual assault and foster hope and healing.

The No. 1 objective to puppy-raising/ dog socializing is LOVE and exposure to lots of things. We want your dog exposed to lots of people, places, noises, and new sights.

You will need to provide your puppy with safe chew toys and teach him what he can and can’t chew on.

You will need to housebreak your puppy.

You will teach him to walk on a leash, sit, lie down, and stay. Depending on how much progress you make, you may be teaching more advanced commands before you know it!

Special Skills: Must love dogs! Willing to dedicate daily training time to a dog.

Puppy-raisers need a family that has a parent who stays home much of each day.

Socializers (partially trained dogs) need to be able to take a dog everywhere that they go.

instructors to instruct classes at the fitness centers. We are looking for individuals to teach our lunch time aerobic classes (timeframe 11am -1pm). Looking to teach Step, Spin, PUMP, Functional Fitness, etc.

Aerobics instructor MUST have the following:

1. Group exercise instructors must have and maintain a primary instructor certification by an AF recognized organization. Instructors must obtain the additional necessary specialized training/certifications for step and kickboxing fitness classes

2.  Group exercise instructors also maintain current First Aid and either the American Heart Association's Basic Life Support/Automated External Defibrillator (BLS/AED) or the Red Cross's Cardiopulmonary

Resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification.

Translators: multiple languages needed, must be fluent in language to read, write and translate

Transportation: must have a valid state driver’s license, 21 years and older, unless active duty.

Arrival Times: During a disaster, request can come anytime day or night.  We ask that you try to be understanding in these times and be as accommodating as possible.
