The advertising of these events does not constitute endorsement by the Federal Government or the U.S. Air Force or the information, products or services contained therein.  If military personnel want to volunteer during duty hours, they must receive permission from their supervisor prior to volunteering.  Additionally, military personnel cannot perform service in uniform unless approved in advance by Maxwell Air Force Base Wing Commander.  To receive approval from the Wing Commander, coordinate with the 42 ABW Judge Advocate (JA) and Public Affairs (PA) offices.

River Region Runners

 

Event Name: Montgomery Jubilee Run - 2 road races in downtown Montgomery AL 

Event Day(s)/Date(s)/Time(s):

Saturday, June 1, 7:30 a.m., 8K road race 

Saturday, June 1, 8 a.m., 2-mile road race

Location: Old Alabama Town (race headquarters), 301 Columbus Street, Montgomery AL 36104 

Purpose of Event: Promote fitness in the Montgomery area to include the Montgomery Police Dept. 

 

Volunteers Requested: 20

Duties:

1.  Course monitors, 16 people.  Start duties - 0730.  End duties - depends on location and race - 0900 or earlier.  Volunteers will stand along different points of the race course and direct runners along the course to ensure they remain on the correct course.

2.  Water stop volunteers, 4 people.  Start duties - 0730.  End duties - 0830 or earlier.  Volunteers will stand at the water stop, fill cups with water, hand water cups to race participants, and pick up discarded water cups and assist with clean-up of the water stop area. 

Arrival Time(s): 6:45-7:00 a.m at Old Alabama Town on June 1st 

Age Requirements: 21 years and above 

Special Skills: Be able to stand outside for up to 1 hour and 45 minutes, be able to assist participants with staying on course, and seek help for any runners that need other assistance

Comfort Care Hospice

 

Event: Hospice Volunteering

Event Day(s)/Date(s)/Time(s): Ongoing

Location: various patient homes or facilities in the Montgomery and tri-county area

Purpose: To provide companionship, caregiver support and active listening to veteran patients at end of life wanting to share military stories or talk in general

 

Volunteers Requested: 5-10

Duties/Tasks: Visit veteran (can visit non veteran as well if desired) patients to provide companionship and active listening to their military career stories which can be valuable especially towards the end of their life.

Arrival time: Would be scheduled with patients around their needs and volunteer availability. Very flexible scheduling

Age Requirements: 14 and up. 18 and under require parental consent. All volunteers must submit to a background check and drug screen. They will also need a current TB Skin test. (we pay for all of those things) There is also a free training program done at our office.

Purpose: Teaching children (ages 4 – 12) bible lessons including crafts/recreation/music

 

Volunteers Requested: 12

Duties:

  1. 2 assist with recreation – various games (outdoor/indoor) for the rotating groups - time  0920 - 1145
  2. 2 assist with snacks – set up/clean up and serve snacks for the rotating groups - time  0920 - 1145
  3. 2 assist with the arts and crafts  for the rotating groups - time  0920 – 1145
  4. 2 assist with the music and movements  for the rotating groups - time  0920 - 1145
  5.  2 assist with the bible lesson team  for the rotating groups - time  0920 – 1145
  6. 2 assist with the  registration and check in each morning  0830 and  1200

Arrival time:  8:30 a.m. for all of the volunteers

Age Requirements: 18 and older, background check will be required

Special Skills: no special skills, need to be able to walk up and down stairs

Event: Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) Site Worker

Location: Maxwell Air Force Base, Gunter Annex or

Purpose: Liaise with MEPS staff to determine the best means for the Red Cross to connect with the recruits and their families

 

Volunteers Requested: 1+

Duties/Tasks: Provide Red Cross preparedness information to the recruits and their families

Age Requirements: 18+

Special Skills:  Strong interpersonal communication and listening skills, enjoy working directly with others, able to work with diverse populations, able to use a computer or willing to learn

Arrival Time: The MEPS briefer would be present at Maxwell AFB, Gunter Annex from 9 a.m-10 a.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays. If only doing MEPS casework, anytime.

Event: Receptionist Volunteers Needed

 

Day(s)/Date(s)/Time(s): Need volunteers who are available at least one day per week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.  Normal volunteer hours will be 11:45 to 13:15 unless the receptionist is on vacation, sick, or attending training.  In those instances, it will be all day:  08:00 to 17:00.

Location: Contact volunteer coordinator for directions.

Purpose:  The Family Sunshine Center exists to end family violence and sexual assault and foster hope and healing.

Duties/Tasks: Provide relief for the receptionist, as well as administrative tasks (as needed) such as copying and filing.

Purpose:  To train (socialize and puppy-raise) service dogs for disabled Veterans and children

The No. 1 objective to puppy-raising/ dog socializing is LOVE and exposure to lots of things. We want your dog exposed to lots of people, places, noises, and new sights.

You will need to provide your puppy with safe chew toys and teach him what he can and can’t chew on.

You will need to housebreak your puppy.

You will teach him to walk on a leash, sit, lie down, and stay. Depending on how much progress you make, you may be teaching more advanced commands before you know it!

Age Requirements: N/A

Special Skills: Must love dogs! Willing to dedicate daily training time to a dog.

Puppy-raisers need a family that has a parent who stays home much of each day.

Socializers (partially trained dogs) need to be able to take a dog everywhere that they go.

Purpose: Maxwell and Gunter Fitness Centers are looking for Volunteer Aerobics

instructors to instruct classes at the fitness centers. We are looking for individuals to teach our lunch time aerobic classes (timeframe 11am -1pm). Looking to teach Step, Spin, PUMP, Functional Fitness, etc.

Special Skills:

Aerobics instructor MUST have the following:

1. Group exercise instructors must have and maintain a primary instructor certification by an AF recognized organization. Instructors must obtain the additional necessary specialized training/certifications for step and kickboxing fitness classes

2.  Group exercise instructors also maintain current First Aid and either the American Heart Association's Basic Life Support/Automated External Defibrillator (BLS/AED) or the Red Cross's Cardiopulmonary

Resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification.

Purpose: To assist in our mission in the battle against hunger sorting and repacking product for distribution to those in need in our 35-county coverage area.

Duties/Tasks: sorting, re-packing, working produce, etc... for distribution

Age Requirements: our youngest age is 13 with a 21 or older adult, we have a 1:6 ratio for teenage groups.  Closed toed shoes are required, reasonable dress code, no shorts

Event: Disaster Evacuee Program

Purpose: To provide support and assistance in the event of a major disaster.

 

Volunteers requested: Unlimited

Duties/Tasks:

Translators: multiple languages needed, must be fluent in language to read, write and translate

Transportation: must have a valid state driver’s license, 21 years and older, unless active duty.

Arrival Times: During a disaster, request can come anytime day or night.  We ask that you try to be understanding in these times and be as accommodating as possible.

Age Requirements:

Translators; 18 and older

Transportation: 21 years and older, unless active duty

Special Skills: Translators: Must be fluent, Transportation: Valid State Driver’s License
